Puerto Rico

We are off sailing from the British Virgin Island in the early morning of april 11th, to get to Dominica Republic which was 260 Nautic Miles away. As we leave Soper's hole we also leave these rental sail boats, our new guide is a lovely dolphin. The wind, bloody Hell, is gone fishing! and we are forced to stop in Puerot Rico. With our brand new US Visa!, we head back a few iles to reach Aguadilla located on the north-west coast of the island.

As we got to Aguadilla Las Brisas a canadian sail boat is already anchored . They were just in front of us while we were in Marigot bay (St Martin) and left to Puerto Rico earlier. They are on their way back to Canada. Eric is from Quebec, Adriana from Argentina and they sail with their 4 years old daughter Valentina. Eric took 14 months off job to sail the carribean islands and they want to sale their boat to Champlain's lake.

Aguadilla is a very pleasant town, the citizens here are so nice and the mentality so different from the french west indies. Everyone here tries to be helpful, from the fisherman to the police station! Even if on a sunday most of the little shops are opened. Most of the people here are meeting on the sandy beach which is right in the middle of what is supposed to be the harbour! Kids surf the swell at the entry while the parents enjoy pick-nick on the sandy beach surrrounded with very shallow water.

The fishermen have to push their flat bottom fishing boats in front of us to manage to reach deeper water in order to be able to start their engine. On their way back it is a lot easier... full speed on to beach while lifting the engine up, still on ! that's the way to beach!

While in town we see brand new modern cars, and also cars from the 60's! We go for a walk in a nearly desert town as every one enjoy the beach, only the oldest persons remain sitting on their chairs in the street right in front of their houses just like in the mediterranean countries. Some houses have a spanish architure style!

We pass in front of the fishermen association with a nice wall painting as well as the Nelson Bar. We end up our walk under the shade of a nice coconut tree on the surfing spot where quite a lot of local surfers seem to have a good time.

Sunsets in Aguadilla are splendid but close to the harbour the water is not too splendid ! too many Unidentified Floating Objects!.

On april 14th, as Aguadilla is not a port of call, we decide to leave with Las Brisas and sail to Dominica Republic wishing for the wind to be a little more constant...and less swell too!!
