Farewell Saint-Martin

March 29th, 2003

Really, we have to go! However the wind is not meeting our wishes, it take us a few days before we decide to be ready to go! Anyway while we have not the slightest sign of wind since march 18th, we have time to share a few "last" drinks with our friends in Cul de Sac, close to Pinel Island and one of the best anchorage on the island on our opinion. I have to admit that the friends we leave in Saint-Martin are almost a part of our family after such a long time here!! While we are heading back to Marigot a Whale jumps close to Flat Island and we consider it as a Happy omen. Once the boat ready, and despite the absence of wind we decide to move to Dog Island and wait there until the evening to sail at night to the British Virgin Islands.

Like Anguilla, Dog Island is a lovely sandy beach with cristal clear water and almost desert, considering that 5 persons is not really a crowd! The sandy bottom is covered with sand dollars, sand biscuits and we even see a few splendid helmet specimens, stingray, as well as nice coral fishes and of course barracudas. In the evening still with no wind we run the engine and move toward the British Virgin Islands hoping the wind to show up later on!! And believe it or not it happens, at around 9 pm we stop the engine for a silent sail, under a starry night. Saint-Martin is rather far away by now only the big circle of light appears. We then decide who goes on watch.
