HURRICANE SEASON 2005

KATRINA-RITA-WILMA

Since november 30th, the hurricane season 2005 is over! and what a hurricane season! Katrina, rita, wilma were part of the unfriendly hurricane visitors of the year for Florida, Louisianna and Mississipi. KATRINA, on her way to Louisianna and before it did the disaster we all know about first landed in Florida and just 3 miles away from us. Rita touched south florida but was big enough to extend its winds to for lauderdale, and Wilma after landing over cancun managed to reinforce while in the gulf of mexico and came back to florida from the west, destroying what was not yet down ! It was really time for the hurricane season to end allowing all the people moved from their homeland to return, giving a rest to the vegetation for the trees to get greener again.

Katrina harmed Florida so little compared to the incredible damages in Louisiana and Mississipi. This hurricane formed late in the bahamas and landed in Hollywood, 3 miles away from fort lauderdale and was category 1. Therefore trees were down and electiricty off for almost 6 days avoiding phone or internet contacts and with just the radio to get news on what was going on in the Louisiania and Mississipi states. As radio seem to minimize the truth on the damages and lost of human lifes, people seem to realize when electricity and net were back the horror of the situation.

Katrina landed and ended in new orleans were damages were predictable but no orders were given fast enough to allow a proper evacuation of every human being, helpless, elderly unable to drive a private car! In a country where the whole economy lies onto consumption and where private cars are the main transportation way, no buses were requisitionned for evacuation before katrina landed. They were used once it was too late. Trains offered to help for evacuation and the offer was turned down. Too late then for those trapped there. One will say that people refused to live, but what reason do they give for the bebridden invalid left alone in houses or hospitals abandoned to themselves... Jails were emptied in the streets and prisonners parked down and then army was all over the place.

Red Cross and other humitarian associations managed to help fast, and action to gather money on the net were going on fairly well, help to the disaster victims came from all over the world, but the government's help was slow. Unfortunately as United States thought racial problems were long forgotten they surfaced from the old cajun bayou!!, reminding to those who had forgotten that not so long ago America parked black people at the rear of the buses... Memory sometimes makes a come back!

RITA

Rita shows up at the same time as the equinoxe tides, occuring an increased tide! Wind blowing up to 70 knots with heavy rains and the tide was so high we could have beach Iritis in the neighbour's garden!

waters level rising, rising...!

Rita landed on the keys with floods and not too much damages but it was big enough for the wind to reach us!

WILMA

wilma

Not much time to rest and Wilma decide to threaten Cancun and then Florida after crossing the gulf of mexico and landing on the west coast of florida. The crossing of the panhandle from west to east is long enough to destroy what was not yet down. Trees were pulled out from the ground, houses suffured a lot of damages, and especially people living in small mobilhome. The small parks lost their green colors all burnt with sea salt . Sail boats around remained mostly safe, boat show was posponed as all the tents flew away, Our neighbour's boat got mast problems, his furler is now in pieces, his solar pannel and portico transformed into a strange design architecture!! IRITIS and captain survived the hurricane without a single scratch!

How to prepare a good hurricane  ...

•  need a 26.5 degrees Celcius sea on not less than 50 meters deep. Need a huge sauce pan!

•  A layer of about 5 kilometers of wet to put in the low and middle troposphere... I know not easy to reach!!

• Your pan must be at least 500 km from the equator!

•  Invite miss Coriolis!

•  Find her a nice depression close to the surface, and decorate with Low values (less than about 10 m/s [20 kts 23 mph]) of vertical wind shear between the surface and the upper troposphere.

And this is it! of course sometimes it is not enough...

But this year little chemists have been practicing quite a lot to update the recipe of preparing a hurricane according to the name list which has not enough names for this huges bugs!

****

By the way no need to practice this recipe while we are still around their favorite landings!!
