Devoted to Florida, Iguana love to sunbath and warm up its cold blood body, on Fort Lauderdale docks, often alone sometines with some of his friends..

Green Iguana

The Green Iguana was imported from central america and is not a native from Florida even if it look so! This wild animal is also is often seen as a pet alone at the end of line, but mostly alone and master of the docks!

Its prehistorical look is not always very attractive and nevertheless it is not a dangerous one! He should be more worried from us, incomparable predator!

Green Iguana( iguana iguana ) or common iguana, goes from fluorescent greens to brown green, this allows him to merge with the landscape and in the coconut trees where he loves to stands in the sun and away from the wind. He can be 1.50m sometimes more and its skin is very strong and resistant to water. On his back there is a range of soft pins. He has long fingers with claws which help him to hold on or climb up the trees. His long and pointy tail is used to pusch back predators when he flies it in the air and can break to free himself when caught. The tail can grow back but will never be the same and will be of a brownish color.

Iguanas can hear and have a fascinating smell, a very sharp view to see you before you see him! He is also a very fast runner!

The male has a big throat he can inflate to impress females or to intimidates predators.

In perpetual pursuit of heat this cold blood animal is omnivorous and can be eating meat when he finds nothing else. As soon as the temperature lower and the sun goes down the Iguana fall in a kind of lethargic coma until the sun rises.

Sometimes they reach the top of the trees and they fall from more than 40 feets without being hurt. They also are very good swimmers and often throuhg themselves in the water to escape a pr3edator. They are very good free divers and manage to stay about 30 minutes underwater...

Male or female can save some grease under their jaws and in the neck to face starvation...

The iguana becomes adult at the age of 2 and can reproduce. The female lays around 30 to 50 eggs in a hole and build more holes to trick other predators looking for eggs. Once the eggs layed the iguana do not come back to the hole and after 8 to 10 weeks the eggs will hatch. The young iguanas will have to behave alone abandonned by their parents. Between 3 to 10 only will surviv.

In latin america the wild iguana is highly looked for his flesh.

Allen's Cay iguana
Cyclura cychlura inornata

Allen's cay Iguanas in the Bahamas is a big iguana and can be a meter or more. It is an under species or the Cyclura cychlura and has no frontal horn or prefrontal scales, he's got a larger head and its scales are larger too, a brown cream with orange back and a pinkish head and lip.

They are about 500 of this specy only. Still under stydy nothing or very little is known on them. Their reproduction on Allan's cay is very low probably due to the tides recovering the little beach where they nest.

The male are much bigger than the femal and both get one centimetre per year. They live more than 25 years and they feed on plants and also on crabs.

Cuban iguana
Cyclura nubila nubila

Cuba's Iguana gets to 40 cm when adult for the male and 32 cm for a female. This specie is mostly grey and has dark head and tail.

Adults are sometimes greener with yellow. Youngs have between 5 to 10 lines going from the middle of the back to the side. Between those there are black lines. Adults have a big crest on their back.
